Keiki Program Now Enrolling 5th & 6th Graders!

What is Hui Mālama O Ke Kai?

Hui Mālama O Ke Kai is a Waimanalo community-based afterschool program. The curriculum and program are focused Native Hawaiian values and on the traditions of our community to reinforce the importance of place in the identity of our students. Students will become aware of their immediate environment and the cultural and historical significance of various wahi pana, or noted areas. ‘Ohana of students are encouraged to participate in programming and attend monthly ‘ohana activities held on weekends and evenings.

 

When?

The Hui Mālama O Ke Kai keiki program runs from October 12, 2010 - May 27, 2011. Programming occurs everyday after school until 6:00pm. Daily attendance is mandatory.

 

Who may apply?

Students attending Blanche Pope and Waimanalo Elementary schools in grades 5 & 6.

 

What does it cost?

There is no cost to enroll in the Hui Mālama O Ke Kai program.

 

How does one apply?

Parents must complete and sign the Student Interest Form provided by school teachers and submit it to their child’s teacher or school counselor no later than September 3rd, 2010.

 

Parents of students considered for the program will be contacted to make a follow-up registration appointment in the month of September.

 

Preference Policy

In order to provide a continuation of services, Hui Mālama O Ke Kai gives preference to students who were enrolled in the program the previous year. Recommendations from teachers and school counselors are also considered. Applications are considered on a first come, first served basis.

 

How can I get more information?

An Open House will be held in the Blanche Pope School cafeteria on August 31st from 6:30-7:30pm. A presentation about the program will be made and program staff and participants will be available to answer questions.

All Hui Mälama O Ke Kai keiki program alumni in the 7th-12th grades are now invited to apply for  the 2010-2011`Öpio Leadership Program!  We are so excited to start a new year and look forward to our future endeavors.  This year the `Öpio program is grouped into progressive cohorts (hui):

Hui 1- 7th & 8th graders

Hui 2 – 9th  & 10th graders

Hui 3 – 11th & 12th graders

 

Application packets for the `Öpio Leadership Program have been sent to 2009-2010 `Öpio Leadership Program participants and Hui Mälama O Ke Kai program partciapnts who have graduated the 6th grade. If you are interested in applying to the `Öpio program, but have not received an application, please contact us.

 

We are excited about our new Leadership Curriculum and cannot wait to start with the `Öpio!  Here is a sneak peek of the up coming events:

3.      Thursday, August 19, 2010:      `Öpio Orientation Dinner (`ohana)

o Lead Program Specialist (Full-Time)
o Lead Program Assistant (Full-Time)
o Tutor (Part-Time)

Hui Malama O Ke Kai is now accepting applications for enrollment in the 2009-2010 program. 5th and 6th grade students from Blanche Pope and Waimanalo Elementary Schools are encouraged to submit their interest sheets to their school counselors by Friday, September 4th!

Clean Energy Festival July 18,2009 Aloha Tower 12 noon to 5:pm

HuiMalamaikeKaiFoundation and Aloha First will have a booth at the first Clean Energy Festival. To promote the idea of a prototype solar power plant. That will support HMKF’s proposal for a long term lease and give Aloha First Village of 80 to 100 families an opportunity to get of the grid. A joint effort to go green and support the trend to limit the use of fossil fuel. Come on down! they’ll be entertainment and other booths with similar intrest as well as prizes and no charge to get in.

What: Scrapbooking (Yearbook) Activity

We will be making pages for our Hui Malama O Ke Kai Yearbook and Ho’ike presentations. Each ‘ohana is strongly engouraged to participate so that all the keiki and ‘opio are represented in our “yearbook”!!!!

When: Thurdsay, April 30th, 6-8:30pm

Dinner will be provided at 6pm, and the activity will start at 6:30pm.
